'Many homes were destroyed' - Chilean firefighters battle Penco flames overnight as wildfires continue to rage in Biobio

"Chilean firefighters continued working to contain the flames in Penco's forests overnight on Sunday as ongoing wildfires engulf Biobio Region. Footage shows the scorched forests and burned down homes, with thick smoke blanketing the area as firefighters conducted containment operations. "Many homes were destroyed, unfortunately we have loss of lives, but we continue working to be able to fight this fire, which has decreased, but not 100%," said Luis Salas, Third Commander of the Penco Fire Department. "Now we continue increasing resources and we are waiting to see the possibility of increasing them a bit more in order to work on what is liquidation, debris removal and search for fatal victims," he added. The Government of Chile has imposed a curfew in the Biobio Region. For the locality of Lirquen, the measure runs from 19:00 until further notice. In Penco, Nacimiento and Laja, the curfew is from 20:00 on Sunday until 6:00 Monday. Fires have also been recorded in Nuble Region, where around 50 homes have been affected. President Gabriel Boric declared a State of Catastrophe in both regions on Sunday following the deaths of 18 people."
