"Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, said that the arrival of a United States military plane on Mexican territory - which has raised public concern following recent US threats to carry out anti-drug operations in Mexico - had been scheduled since October 2024 as part of previously agreed training activities between both countries. "There were no United States troops coming, not at all,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference in Mexico City on Monday, adding that authorisation from the Senate of the Republic was not necessary. “It is an authorization that was given since October of last year and it was related to a training matter,” Sheinbaum explained. She added that Mexican personnel from the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection boarded that aircraft to go to the United States for training. The president noted that these types of training were not something extraordinary, as they are part of 'bilateral agreements' between Mexico and the United States. The aircraft that landed in Toluca on Saturday morning was a Hercules C-130 military plane. At that time, Mexico’s Security Cabinet reported that it was an authorised flight in accordance with bilateral cooperation agreements."
