When Harry met Sicily! - Cyclone forces residents to evacuate as strong wind and rain lash island

"Evacuation and emergency measures were prompted across Sicily as Cyclone Harry hit island with persistent rain, while wind speed was reaching about 100 km/h (62 mph). Footage filmed on Tuesday shows high waves hitting shores amid a violent gale and a rescue team gearing up and carrying inflatable rescue boats. Trees are seen swaying due to the wind, and a police officer is guiding locals on the road. "This entire area has been evacuated. Entry is prohibited," a police officer said. "Even the homes have been evacuated because it's dangerous and many people are walking down to look at the sea, but they don't know they're exposing themselves to very serious risks." He added responders are trying to keep residents away from the dangerous area until the situation improves, and locals are able to return. "They ordered us to evacuate, get out, and leave our homes. We were even given free accommodation by the Municipality of Acireale," one local shared. "The weather forecast isn't favourable, we were very anxious all night. But we hope nothing serious happens." Around 200 towns activated emergency operation centres, and about 150 ordered school closures. Over 200 Civil Protection workers, 1,000 volunteers and 5,000 municipal workers are involved. The worst weather was expected on Tuesday, with gradual improvement forecast from Wednesday despite continued rain."
