Zama-zama violence drives 400 families out of their homes

More than 400 families from the Seporong informal settlement in Randfontein have fled their homes due to violence and threats from illegal miners known as zama zamas. They are now sheltering in a community hall, sharing limited facilities, and facing food shortages and poor hygiene. Residents recount incidents of home invasions, assaults, and extortion by the zama zamas, leading to trauma and fear. Despite appeals for help, police intervention has been insufficient, and residents continue to live in fear, awaiting relocation assistance from the government.
