Fire horse energy - Hong Kong marks Lunar New Year as thousands gather for racing at Sha Tin

"Thousands of people gathered at Sha Tin Racecourse on Thursday to watch top runners as the Hong Kong Jockey Club celebrated Chinese New Year with its Year of the Horse raceday. Footage shows visitors gathering by the track as horses race past. Fans are later seen placing bets and engaging with attending pop stars. "Everyone is very lively, and the atmosphere is very warm," a visitor said. "Feeling very good energy this year. Off the back of a tough 2025, I think we're going to gallop through '26 with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of joy," added a second. The raceday centred on the Year of the Horse Cup, a 1,600-metre course carrying a purse of 3.12 million HKD (400,000 USD, 338,000 EUR). This year's event also featured film and music star Aaron Kwok, who appeared as the club's Year of the Horse Ambassador. Pop performer Kelly Chen also joined a variety show, blending Cantopop and holiday blessings."
