LGUs urged to improve fire prevention

BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian called on local government units (LGUs) to intensify fire prevention measures as the dry summer months approach. ”Now that the summer season is approaching, it should be in our nature to avoid any accidents that could cause fires,” Gatchalian said, stressing that prevention and community awareness remain key to reducing fire-related risks. The senator’s appeal comes in the wake of a devastating blaze that struck Barangay Lamion in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, on Feb. 3. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said flammable materials and strong winds fueled the rapid spread of the fire in the densely populated coastal community. Authorities reported that approximately 1,404 families were displaced by the incident. Damage to private property was estimated at P17.5 million, while losses to public infrastructure reached about P18 million. Gatchalian emphasized that many fire incidents are preventable, citing common causes such as overloaded electrical circuits and illegal power connections. He urged stricter enforcement against unauthorized electrical hookups and called for greater vigilance in the proper handling and storage of liquefied petroleum gas to minimize fire hazards. ”Simple but consistent safety practices can save lives and protect livelihoods,” he said, adding that LGUs should intensify public information campaigns and community-based fire drills, especially in areas where homes are built in close proximity to one another. During his visit to the affected community, Gatchalian distributed 300 sacks of rice to families displaced by the fire. He stressed that strengthening local disaster preparedness mechanisms, improving compliance with fire safety regulations and fostering cooperation among residents are critical steps toward protecting vulnerable communities from similar tragedies in the future. ”Our communities, especially in areas where houses are close together, need to come together to have proper cooperation to prevent disasters caused by fire,” Gatchalian said.
