'We're still waiting for justice'! - Bratislava marks eighth anniversary of Jan Kuciak's killing with calls to protect press

"Demonstrators gathered in Bratislava on Saturday to solemnly mark the eighth anniversary of the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee, Martina Kusnirova. Footage shows participants singing along to musical performances while holding candles and flashlights. Journalists later delivered speeches to the crowd, urging justice and accountability for what they described as attacks on press freedom. "We have been standing here every year. We have been waiting for justice for eight years. Eight years ago, we warned that it was government politicians who were attacking journalists and making them targets," one journalist stated. "We demanded that government politicians take our findings about corruption at the highest levels seriously, to answer our questions, which we are also asking on your behalf," he continued. Kuciak and Kusnirova were shot dead at their home in Velka Maca in February, 2018. Kuciak was investigating alleged relationships between the Italian mafia and former Prime Minister Robert Fico's party, Direction - Social Democracy (SMER). Kuciak was also investigating tax fraud of the Slovak business elite. The murders sparked nationwide protests, leading to the resignation of then-Prime Minister Robert Fico. Fico later returned to office on October 25, 2023 following parliamentary elections."
