'FIFA, go home!' - Mexicans play football with 'Trump's head' to protest 'World Cup of dispossession'

"Activists held a football tournament in Mexico City's Zocalo on Saturday as a form of protest against what they called the 'World Cup of dispossession,' seeking to highlight the gentrification and privatisation of public space that they claim has accelerated in the capital ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Footage shows participants playing football with balls covered in masks of the US President, Donald Trump. The footballs also featured writings reading; 'dispossession,' 'resistance' and 'FIFA go home.' "[We're here to] protest against the FIFA World Cup, against the World Cup of corporations, against this World Cup that has put governments at the service of capital. It is generating gentrification, social cleansing, and is also generating unrest within society," said Raul Romero, a demonstrator. "We are not opposed to football, we are not opposed to sport; we oppose the privatisation of sport, we oppose the capital that is destroying this city and our forms of social fabric," he added. Another accused authorities of 'screwing the working class' in exchange for 'five miserable matches,' warning that rent will become too expensive for those living near Estadio Banorte. "The underpasses of Calzada de Tlalpan, they are going to remove the people who work there, and that will mean less security for those of us in those surroundings. It is not right and we must not allow it. FIFA, go home," he added. The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada under the expanded 48-team format. The event, spread across dozens of venues, is expected to break attendance records set during the 2026 tournament."
