"A wave of violence has erupted in Puerto Vallarta, in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, after information spread about the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho'. He was the leader of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) and was reportedly killed following a clash with Mexico’s federal security forces. Images filmed on Sunday morning show a dense column of black smoke rising from one of the fires reported in the coastal city. State authorities have reported shootings, vehicles set on fire, blockades on major avenues, and tire spikes placed at access points to the city. They also confirmed the arrest of individuals allegedly involved in the violent acts, though no figures were specified. Authorities urged residents and tourists to avoid areas where blockades or fires have been reported and to limit non-essential travel. According to the federal government, Puerto Vallarta is one of the key locations from which the CJNG coordinates many of its operations across Mexico. This explains the strong presence of members of the criminal group in the area. For her part, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said on social media that "there is absolute coordination with the governments of all states," and called for calm."
