Body recovered at site of Rizal landfill collapse

MANILA, Philippines—The body of one of the three persons reported missing following a landfill collapse in  Montalban, Rizal has been retrieved, Mayor Ronnie Evangelista said Monday. Evangelista said that the body was recovered on Sunday, February 22. Evangelista said efforts to find the other missing persons continue. “The retrieval will not be that easy since this is not an ordinary landslide, and retrieval will be done manually,” the mayor said. He denied earlier reports that about 50 people went missing when a huge pile of trash collapsed on Feb. 20 at the Green Leap Sanitary Landfill located in Barangay San Isidro. Evangelista clarified that the landfill was not managed by the provincial or municipal government. He said retrieval operations will continue and the local government will help determine the circumstances leading to the incident. Meanwhile, Rizal Governor Nina Ynares urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
