CITY OF CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro — A total of 106 olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings were released back into the sea early Sunday morning, after emerging from a protected hatchery in Barangay Navotas. Robert Alfante of the city’s Bantay Dagat and Fisheries Management Office (FMO) identified the hatchlings as Lepidochelys olivacea, one of the smallest and most vulnerable sea turtle species, known for its olive-green, heart-shaped shell. Alfante was joined by Alister Lumat of the nongovernment organization Blue Alliance-Philippines, which partners with the FMO on marine conservation efforts.
