"Mozambique's First Lady, Gueta Selemane Chapo, visited flood-affected communities on Sunday as the country battles catastrophic flooding that has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Footage shows Chapo walking through the Mazivila accommodation centre, talking and dancing with locals, visiting a clinic, and supervising relief distribution. She can be seen preparing meals with community members, posing with new mothers holding their infants and aid packages, and delivering a speech to the crowd, as locals celebrate. "The feeling is the same that we have expressed almost every day in interviews when we are with the population: gratitude. Gratitude to all our partners and to those who are yet to come and support us," said the First Lady during her visit. "This noble mission that we are carrying out – visiting our families, our brothers and sisters in the reception centres, and not only them, but also the surrounding population – we support everyone because at this moment everyone is suffering," she persisted. As for the assistance being provided, Chapo noted, "Today we received many items, from hygiene materials, dignity kits, and food. We have sugar, sanitary pads, oil, soap, beans, and even buckets. We also received a large quantity of capulanas, because when we make a request, we ask for capulanas – our women need them." "This is our true mission: to feel the pain of others, to feel their suffering as if it were our own. That is what we have been conveying, and that is what we all must be as Mozambicans, without exception," she underscored. According to the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction, the floods have impacted an estimated 860,000 people nationwide, displaced more than 392,000, and killed hundreds since October."
