A HEALTH expert reminded Filipinos that protein intake is not just for athletes, emphasizing that consuming protein consistently offers many benefits ahead of World Protein Day. Dr. Krissy Ladner, director of sports performance and nutrition education at Herbalife, said Monday that while Filipinos include protein-rich foods in their everyday diet, it is important to distribute protein intake across meals to help support steady energy levels, muscle maintenance and appetite control. “Protein is not just for athletes or specific goals. It is a daily nutrient that supports movement, recovery and long-term vitality,” Ladner said. According to the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), in 2023, most households met their requirements for protein compared to the previous years. Despite this, Ladner noted that spreading meals with adequate protein helps reduce energy dips that can happen when meals rely too heavily on refined carbohydrates. She explained that protein plays a key role in maintaining and repairing muscle tissue. Every movement challenges the muscle fibers. This, in turn, supports physical strength, mobility, and metabolic health — essential components of staying active at any age. Moreover, it supports metabolic health by maintaining lean muscle mass, which is metabolically active tissue. This means it plays a role in how the body uses energy, helping regulate metabolism and supporting long-term weight management when paired with balanced nutrition and regular activity. As people age, protein becomes more important, as the body becomes less efficient at maintaining muscle mass starting in midlife. Consistent protein intake can help mitigate this decline, supporting muscle repair and maintenance, which are vital for staying resilient. “When protein intake is consistent and balanced, it becomes a powerful tool for supporting an active, energized life,” Ladner said.
