"Emergency services and police made rounds throughout New York City on Monday as a relentless winter storm buried the city and surrounding areas under snow. Footage shows fire trucks driving through the streets with wailing sirens, as public workers attempt to clear the pavements and streets of the snow. According to officials, total snowfall accumulated between 16 (40.6 cm) and 24 inches (60.9 cm), with wind gusts reaching as high as 55 mph (88 kph). Heavy blowing snow reduced visibility to below one-quarter mile (400m), prompting authorities to impose travel bans and blizzard warnings. Thousands of flights were cancelled according to media reports. Rhode Island received more than 30 inches of snow (76.2 cm), reportedly shattering previous records.
