JI to launch ‘Jeenay Do Karachi’ drive on 27th

KARACHI: Announcing a “Jeenay Do Karachi” drive from February 27, Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chapter Monem Zafar on Monday reiterated that an empowered local government system is the only viable solution to Karachi’s chronic problems, asserting that neither the federal nor the provincial government is capable of resolving the city’s issues. Addressing a press conference here at Idara Noor-e-Haq, he said Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its struggle for Karachi’s rights and the resolution of public grievances, despite police violence, teargas shelling, arrests, and the registration of terrorism charges against protesters. Monem Zafar said during this drive public gatherings would be held on February 27 in Orangi Town, February 28 in Liaquatabad, and March 1 at RCD Ground in Malir. JI Amir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman will address the conventions. He added that 13 more rallies would be organised during Ramazan, while the movement would be further intensified after Eid-ul-Fitr. He emphasised that the JI believes in peaceful, constitutional, and democratic struggle, but maintained that protest cannot be confined to homes. “Peaceful demonstrations take place on the streets, and no one can stop us,” he said, questioning why other political parties are allowed to hold large public gatherings, while JI is denied the same right.
