Lufthansa scraps flights to NY and Boston amid winter storm

German airline Lufthansa has cancelled all flights to New York and Boston scheduled to take off on Monday due to a blizzard on the US East Coast, a spokesman for the carrier said, reported dpa. Flights from New York and Boston to Germany have also been scrapped, he said, adding that so far there have been no cancellations for Tuesday. The Lufthansa Group also includes SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Italy's ITA Airways and Brussels Airlines. Other carriers including Condor, Singapore Airlines and United have also cancelled flights to and from Frankfurt, Germany's biggest aviation hub. A severe winter storm was heading towards the north-eastern United States on Sunday, with more than 50 centimetres of snow forecast for some areas amid freezing temperatures. Severe weather warnings are in place for millions of residents in several states. US media reported, citing meteorologists, that some 35 million residents could be affected. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency, noting this is the first blizzard to hit the city since 2016.
