Security ramped up - Locals fearful in Michoacan cartel leader’s home state after violence over 'El Mencho' killing

"The military and police remained on high alert in Michoacan on Monday, twenty-four hours after the capture and killing of Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho'. Footage shows Morelia's half-empty streets in Morelia as soldiers and police were performing traffic stops in Michoacan, the home state of 'El Mencho'. "Since yesterday, it has been a bit complicated. A bit tense because of what happened with the arrest of that person over in Jalisco. Here in Morelia, there were some burnings, some blockades, several shops started to close, banks as well," local resident Cesar Cabrera said. "It was hard for us to find some shops still open, as well as petrol stations. There is a lot of fear, because in some areas blockades and risky situations are still being reported," he added. So far, authorities have not reported any fatalities in the Michoacan capital, although they confirmed that the security deployment will continue in coordination with federal forces to prevent further acts of violence and restore normality in the capital and surrounding municipalities. The federal Security Cabinet reported the deaths of 25 members of the National Guard following clashes in Jalisco triggered by the capture of 'El Mencho', who died while being transported to Mexico City after being injured in the operation to detain him. 'El Mencho' was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico's most violent and powerful criminal organisations. Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho', was born on 17 July 1966 in the municipality of Aguililla, in the state of Michoacan."
