Atmosphere of fear - Businesses, schools shut in Juchitan after violence over death of Mexican cartel boss 'El Mencho'

"Businesses and schools in Juchitan de Zaragoza remained closed on Monday following the unrest triggered by the capture and death of cartel leader Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho'. Footage shows nearly empty streets, while local businesses, banks and educational institutions were seen shut. "Because of insecurity, people hardly want to go out. The shops are hardly selling anything," commented Mario Esteva Lopez, a local resident. Resident Pedro Toledo Ramirez said authorities must reinforce security "so that people have a little more confidence to go out", describing the situation as 'very alarming'. Although the operation to capture 'El Mencho' was carried out in Jalisco, road blockades and burning vehicles were reported in at least 19 other states across the country. In response, state governor Salomon Jara announced that an additional 1,000 security personnel were deployed in Juchitan with operational vehicles and tactical armour to restore order. The Oaxaca Secretariat of Education suspended school classes on Monday in all educational establishments in the Isthmus, a measure that will remain in place until further notice. Meanwhile, the federal Security Cabinet reported the deaths of 25 members of the National Guard following clashes in Jalisco triggered by the capture of 'El Mencho', who died while being transported to Mexico City after being injured in the operation to detain him. 'El Mencho' was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico's most violent and powerful criminal organisations."
