Tourist arrivals during the Lunar New Year holiday rose about 14 percent to 1.77 million compared to a year ago, the government said on Tuesday, with a vast majority of travellers coming from the mainland. Official figures showed trips made by visitors from across the border reached 1.5 million between February 15 and 23, while the figure by tourists from elsewhere stood at 270,000. Mainland arrivals peaked on the second day of the Year of the Horse as some 210,000 visitors arrived in the city. Chief Secretary Eric Chan said the SAR was "filled with a festive atmosphere" during the holiday period that saw a number of celebratory events such as the float parade and fireworks display. "These diverse and enriching events were well received by both residents and visitors, not only creating a joyous atmosphere throughout the city but also effectively attracting crowds, stimulating consumption, and bringing opportunities to various industries such as retail, catering and tourism, showcasing Hong Kong's vibrant and welcoming metropolitan charm," Chan said in a statement.
