Four taken to Auckland City Hospital after bus and car crash in Grafton

Four people have been injured in a crash between a bus and a car at a notorious intersection in Grafton, Auckland. This afternoon’s serious accident comes after more than 20 reported crashes at the intersection since 2020 alone. Police said they are currently attending the incident at the intersection of Park Rd and Carlton Gore Rd. The crash was reported at 2.40pm. Police said traffic is being diverted down Park Rd while the scene is cleared. Hato Hone St John told the Herald it was notified of the incident at 2.36pm and three ambulances and one rapid response unit attended. “Four patients have been assessed and are being transported to Auckland City Hospital, three in moderate condition and one in minor condition,” St John said. Fire and Emergency New Zealand said they responded to a motor vehicle crash between a bus and a car. The spokesperson said three fire crews responded and two were later stood down. No one was trapped in the incident. Notorious intersection The intersection of Park and Carlton Gore Rds is under investigation for possible safety improvements after 22 crashes were reported at the site between 2020 and 2024. The intersection had been identified as having issues with crashes when drivers were turning right while travelling from the north approach of Park Rd to the west approach of Carlton Gore Rd, Auckland Transport wrote last week in an update to proposed safety works at the accident hotspot. Nine of the 22 crashes had been directly attributed to filtered right turns, a traffic signal movement that allows drivers to turn right across oncoming traffic lanes during green lights – as long as they give way to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. “Almost 67% of the crashes related to filtering [at this intersection] resulted in injury … notably, one of these crashes involved an e-scooter,” AT wrote in the update. The Auckland Council transport arm initially proposed banning filtered right turning from Park Rd to Carlton Gore Rd west, removing the right turn road markings on Park Rd, and putting a sign near Domain Drive North telling drivers about the changes. This was to take place by June. However, AT said in last week’s update that after “carefully reviewing” community feedback it wouldn’t be going ahead with the proposed changes. “Instead, we will investigate whether it is possible to build a dedicated right turn bay on Park Rd north approach. “This would allow a separate right-turn traffic signal phase, so drivers turning right can do so more safely without conflicting with through traffic.”
