Deadly deluge - At least 28 dead, 400 displaced as Juiz de Fora declares state of calamity

"Severe flooding in southeastern Brazil killed at least 28 people and left dozens missing in Minas Gerais state, with meteorologists warning of increased rainfall in the coming days. Drone footage filmed on Tuesday shows the devastation caused by landslides and flooding from heavy rains battering the cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba, about 310 kilometres north of Rio de Janeiro. The toll released by the Minas Gerais state government reports at least 22 deaths in Juiz de Fora and another six in Uba. More than 400 people have been forced to leave their homes. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva recognised a state of calamity in Juiz de Fora and ordered an increase in rescue efforts with support from the national Civil Defence. The National Institute of Meteorology alerted that more rain is expected for the region, which has recorded more than 580 millimetres of accumulated rainfall in February alone, making it the rainiest month in the history of Juiz de Fora, according to municipal authorities."
