"Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Chania on Tuesday over the arrival of the USS aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford at Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete a day earlier, amid rising tensions with Iran. “We have now realised Chania has become a service station for NATO murderers coming once again to spread terror in the Middle East,” a protester said. Footage shows people carrying large banners and marching through the city while chanting slogans. Protesters can be seen holding placards reading ‘NATO Killers Go Home.’ “For us, it is a primary goal and very important that the Souda base be closed,” he demanded. Another protester accused the Greek government of abetting the US in its ‘imperialist’ war agenda. “It is a disgrace for the Greek government,” he said. “For those who support these American plans, supposedly to [...] establish democracy in Iran, when of course the war being planned is for energy resources, for Iran's geostrategic importance, and for energy routes.” He added: “We will continue on the streets of struggle, demanding no participation, no involvement in the imperialist wars in the wider region of the country.” Souda is home to a NATO military base, a strategic facility for Greece, the US, and the NATO military alliance in the eastern Mediterranean. The world's largest warship arrived in Greece amid US military buildup in the Middle East and renewed student protests in Iran on Sunday. Tehran has accused the US of escalating demonstrations in recent months, after Trump told people to 'keep protesting' and that 'help is on the way'."
