"The Mexican government has sent nearly 1,200 additional tonnes of humanitarian aid to Cuba on Tuesday, transported aboard two Mexican Navy vessels that set sail from the port of Veracruz. Images show the two vessels departing the dock carrying large quantities of aid en route to the island. The shipment was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, which said the cargo was sent on the instructions of President Claudia Sheinbaum. The vessels Papaloapan and Huasteco are expected to arrive on the island in around four days, according to the foreign ministry statement. Among the basic supplies carried by the ARM Papaloapan are beans and powdered milk, with a combined volume of 1,078 tonnes, while the ARM Huasteco is transporting 92 tonnes of beans and 23 tonnes of various food items. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Mexico’s long-standing tradition of solidarity with Latin America, particularly with Cuba, and recalled that in recent months the country has sent aid to nations affected by emergencies, such as the wildfires in California and Chile, as well as flooding in Texas, among other natural disasters across the continent. This second shipment of aid from Mexico to Cuba responds to the humanitarian situation facing the island, marked in recent months by shortages of food and fuel, prolonged failures in the electricity system and the impact of United States sanctions, after Washington recently announced tariffs targeting countries that supply oil to the Caribbean nation. According to data presented by Cuba to the United Nations, the sanctions caused losses of more than 7.5 billion dollars between 2023 and 2024, affecting imports, financing and key sectors such as food, energy and health."
