Back to the Elysee - Macron welcomes Timor-Leste's Ramos-Horta for second visit after two years

"French President Macron and his counterpart from Timor-Leste, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta, met for the second time in two years at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Wednesday. Footage from the palace's courtyard shows Jose Ramos-Horta arriving and being greeted by Macron, as both shake hands before heading inside. "East Timor's accession to ASEAN opens a new chapter for our partnership, rooted in shared democratic values and a common commitment to multilateralism," Macron said on Instagram. "His voice reminds us of a simple imperative: the law of the strongest must never prevail, neither in Ukraine, nor in Burma, nor in the Middle East," he wrote. In January 2024, ties between the two nations reached a 'historic' milestone as both leaders met in Paris, marking the first-ever meeting at the level of heads of state. During that initial visit, Ramos-Horta formally requested that France open an embassy in Dili – a move that has since seen significant progress, alongside French investments in Timor-Leste's renewable energy and infrastructure sectors."
