17 killed during Basant celebrations, LHC told

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) was told on Wednesday that 17 people lost their lives during the three-day Basant festival celebrations in Lahore. The Home Department Punjab submitted a report in some identical petitions filed against Kite Flying Act, 2025. The court directed that a copy of the government report be handed over to the petitioner’s lawyer and sought its reply by next hearing. The court also sought a detailed report of injured during the festival. According to the report, three people died from electrocution, two lost their lives after falling from trees, and 12 died after falling from rooftops while participating in Basant-related activities. The petitioner’s counsel contended that data regarding those injured by kite strings had not been provided. He asked the court to ask for a comprehensive detail of both fatalities and injuries that occurred during the festival. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
