"Venezuela's National Assembly appointed human rights lawyer Larry Devoe as acting attorney general and named Tarek William Saab as acting ombudsman on Wednesday. The brief ceremony followed lawmakers' announcement that Saab resigned as attorney general, without giving a reason. Parliament also said Ombudsman Alfredo Ruiz stepped down for personal, family and health reasons, citing a letter sent to the Assembly's board. Newly appointed acting attorney general Larry Devoe pledged to 'work tirelessly' to help consolidate a justice system he said would be 'worthy' of the Venezuelan people. "A justice system that leaves behind the stigmas and discrimination it has historically inherited," Devoe said. At his swearing-in, newly appointed acting ombudsman Tarek William Saab said he served as attorney general 'with dignity and honour,' helping to uphold 'democratic coexistence' and peace in the face of aggressions 'never seen before' in the country's recent history. The resignations by Saab and Ruiz Angulo come as Parliament advances an amnesty process. Venezuela's National Assembly approved the creation of a Preliminary Evaluation Committee, chaired by lawmaker Giuseppe Alessandrello, to kick off the appointment process for new authorities. The committee will oversee the formation of a Nominations Committee, which will receive and assess candidates for attorney general and ombudsman, in line with legal deadlines."
