Make Brexit walk the plank? Metsola urges UK-EU to ‘put ghosts of the past to bed’, 'steer own ships' but 'sail in convoy'

"EU envoy Roberta Metsola on Wednesday urged the European Union and United Kingdom to ‘reset’ their bilateral relations, warning that both sides risk losing sovereignty and control if neither is willing. “It is time to reset the partnership between the European Union and the United Kingdom,” Metsola explained. “We can put the ghosts of the past to bed and write a new chapter.” She said that recent collaborations in air defence and nuclear issues between the two sides are promising and will form the basis of the 2026 EU-UK summit. At the UK–EU summit last year, a Security and Defence Partnership (SDP) was formalised, which called for regular cooperation across different levels of government and areas of security, including maritime, space, cyber and hybrid. However, in November, the UK refused to join the EU's €150 billion SAFE defence fund. Recently, Prime Minister Starmer signalled that the UK was ready to return to the table, provided there is a ‘fairer price’ for British industry. “I see no contradiction between the European Union and the United Kingdom steering their own ships. But we must also know when it is wiser to sail in a convoy,” she stated, citing Greenland as an example of such cooperation. “Any adversary must know that in a crisis they would face our combined economic and military strength,” she continued. “The United States on all this has been and will remain a crucial ally against this context,” she added. A stronger Europe, she said, would create a more balanced transatlantic partnership and a more capable, reliable NATO ally able to defend itself. Metsola was in the UK on a two-day visit from February 24-25. She held a series of institutional meetings with the highest representatives of the UK Parliament and Government, aimed at finding ‘new ways of working together’."
