On appeal, a medicine student has again been found guilty of assault and rape of a fellow student but has not been given any punishment. ‘It is and remains rape,’ emphasised press judge Annelien Verschaeve. ‘A suspension of sentence is not the same as impunity.’ The case caused quite a stir last year. A Leuven court decided to grant a gynaecology student a suspension of sentencing after being found guilty of the sexual assault and rape of a fellow student. The student was found guilty but not sentenced.
