Max Scherzer's 8-year-old kid says she loves Toronto in adorable letter to Blue Jays

Nobody was happier to see Max Scherzer re-sign with the Toronto Blue Jays than his daughter, Brooke. Brooke, who is just eight years old, seemingly fell in love with Toronto as much as her parents last year, and, much like her mom and dad, was praying for Mad Max to return to the Blue Jays. Early Thursday morning, she got her wish. The Blue Jays announced at nearly 1:00 a.m. ET that they have re-signed Scherzer to a one-year, $3 million deal. Sportsnet's Shi Davidi also reports that the deal has up to $10 million in performance bonuses. It appeared that following several other pitching additions in the offseason, Scherzer's time with the Jays had come to an end. That changed last week, as it was reported that Toronto had emerged as the frontrunner to re-sign the 41-year-old. And maybe, just maybe, it had to do with some prodding from Brooke. After the deal had been announced, Scherzer's wife, Erica, shared an incredible, handwritten note from her daughter written earlier in the offseason. The adorable note made it very clear that Becca hoped to be back in Toronto for the 2026 season. "Dear Blue Jays," the note reads. "I am so sorry that you didn't win the World Series. I hope that you win next time. I hope my dad is back on the team. My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. "We loved the aquarium, CN Tower and of course, the stadium. I am looking forward to coming back next season. Love, Max Scherzer's daughter.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Erica Scherzer (@emaysway) Scherzer's return is interesting from the standpoint that it gives the Blue Jays a ton of starting depth. They also have the likes of Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Jose Berrios at their disposal. With the regular season just 30 days away, Scherzer will need some time to ramp things up. When he returns, he could wind up finding himself in more of a bullpen role, though it wouldn't be surprising to see him make spot starts throughout the season. Scherzer, who is the most fiery competitor you'll ever see , struggled throughout the 2025 regular season with the Jays, posting a 5.19 ERA through just 85 innings. The playoffs, however, were an entirely different story. Scherzer wound up making three starts for the Jays during their run to the World Series, posting a 3.77 ERA along with 11 strikeouts. It was an admirable showing and may have allowed for him to extend his career by at least one more season. The exact details for when Scherzer will be ready to rejoin the team remain to be seen. Either way, this is a signing that Blue Jays fans, none more so than Brooke, are extremely pleased with.
