The First High Criminal Court of Appeal has upheld a 10-year prison sentence against a 23-year-old Asian defendant convicted of drug trafficking. The court accepted the appeal in form but rejected it on the merits, affirming the lower court’s ruling, which also imposed a BD 5,000 fine, permanent deportation, and confiscation of the seized narcotics. The case unfolded when three police officers on patrol grew suspicious of a vehicle parked on the roadside with the defendant inside. Upon approaching him, they observed visible signs of nervousness and trembling hands. At the time, he was sending a voice message in a foreign language via WhatsApp, and officers discovered a previously sent message containing a location pin. When he noticed the police presence, he attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. A search of the defendant revealed an unidentified liquid substance in his possession, while suspected narcotics were found inside his vehicle. He and the seized items were referred to the Drug Enforcement Directorate for further investigation.
