"Hundreds took to the streets of Athens on Thursday, demanding justice and accountability as they marked the third anniversary of the Tempi train crash that killed at least 57 people. Footage shows demonstrators throwing red paint at the Ministry of Labour while chanting slogans as well as marching with placards among others bearing names of the victims who lost their lives in the crash. "We are closing our universities and schools because we do not forget and we do not forgive the crime at Tempi," Panagiotis Lontos, a demonstrator said. "We do not forget, and we do not forgive the deaths of our 57 fellow human beings, young people, our fellow students, with whom we shared the same dreams, went through the same anxieties, and who were lost unjustly, murdered based on this policy of profit," he added. Another demonstrator Praxitelis Bardaxolglou shared that the struggle activists continue throughout years made it impossible for the 'crime to be covered up'. "We continue now to ensure accountability cuts to the bone. Political and criminal responsibilities must be assigned, no matter how high up they go," he concluded. The head-on collision between a passenger train and a cargo train killed 57 people, mostly young adults, and injured dozens more in 2023. A massive explosion following the crash resulted in more deaths, raising concerns that the cargo train was carrying illegal flammable substances. An inquiry report had blamed human error, outdated infrastructure, and major systemic failures for Greece's deadliest train accident."
