Animal rescue - Tigress, bears from Argentina zoo begin new lives in Bulgaria, Netherlands

"The international animal welfare organization Four Paws successfully relocated the first animals rescued from the former Lujan Zoo, in Buenos Aires, following their departure from Argentina on February 23. The brown bears Gordo and Florencia were transferred on February 24 to the BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa, in Bulgaria, jointly managed by Fondation Brigitte Bardot and Four Paws. The tigress Flora was taken to the FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary, in the province of Frisia, in the Netherlands, where she will receive specialized lifelong care. Footage filmed shows the animals arriving at their new enclosures, following the closure of the former zoo in February 2020, a situation that left dozens of specimens without a definitive destination. The rescue was finalized after a veterinary evaluation carried out in November 2025, which determined that the three animals required urgent medical attention. In the case of the two bears, they were kept in conditions "far below acceptable welfare standards," while the tigress Flora had to undergo surgery due to a condition of ingrown claws for months that made it difficult for her to stand or walk. The organization stated that as part of its work, a team of veterinarians and wildlife experts examined more than 60 big cats and two bears from the former Lujan Zoo, thus developing "the largest operation of this kind in Latin America in such a short time"."
