"Residents of Suwayda in southern Syria welcomed 61 freed detainees released as part of an exchange deal between the Syrian transitional government and the National Guard, brokered by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The detainees had been arrested during clashes between Bedouin tribes and local Druze groups in the province. Footage filmed on Thursday shows the detainees stepping off a bus as crowds gathered to cheer their arrival. Emotional reunions with family members were also seen. Mulham Nasr, one of the released detainees, explained how he was detained by government forces while travelling from his village to Sweida city in a minibus. Hiba al-Bartouni, a relative of another detainee, said it was a unique and emotional moment after over seven months. Tareq al-Magoush, a National Guard official responsible for detainee affairs, said that negotiations were ongoing to secure the return others still held Syrian media reported that the exchange included 86 people in total - 61 detainees from Suwayda and 25 from transitional government forces. The National Guard was founded on August 23 following the merger of Druze armed factions under a single command structure, amid ongoing unrest and escalating demands by some local groups for separation from the transitional government in Damascus.
