Jailed Deutsche Welle (DW) reporter Alican Uludağ has been transferred to a single cell in Istanbuls high-security Marmara prison, his lawyer told dpa on Friday, as a dispute over the trial's jurisdiction continues, reported dpa. Uludağ is in good morale and awaiting a response from the court after a formal objection was filed against his detention, lawyer Abbas Yalçın told dpa. Uludağ was arrested in Istanbul on February 20 on charges of "insulting the president" in social media posts following a police raid on his Ankara home a day before. Despite his residence being in the capital, an Istanbul court ordered his pre-trial detention. While authorities initially indicated to his family that a transfer to Ankara was imminent, Uludağ remained in Istanbul, Germany's international broadcaster DW separately reported on Friday. Lawyers cited criminal procedure rules they say require the Istanbul prosecutor to transfer the file to Ankara prosecutors, according to DW. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek defended the proceedings on Wednesday, stating the "independent judiciary" would resolve the dispute. The case has drawn scrutiny from press freedom advocates, who say the jurisdiction dispute adds to concerns over due process in prosecutions involving journalists. The German government, activists and the main Turkish opposition called for Uludağ's release.
