"Hundreds marched in Caracas on Friday to mark 37 years since the Caracazo uprising and demand the release of Nicolas Maduro, holding Venezuelan and PSUV flags. Footage shows the demonstration setting off from the Gran Muro de Petare, with participants commemorating the events of February 27, 1989, and chanting in support of President Nicolas Maduro. "I am a survivor of that February 27, when I was just a child, when a humble father and mother had nothing to eat at home," said a march participant. During the march, demonstrators also demanded the release of Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who were detained during a US attack in the beginning of January in Caracas. "We must also use this platform to send greetings with a loud cheer to our worker president, Nicolas Maduro Moros, and demand the immediate release of the president and the first lady, Silvia Flores de Maduro," said Pedro Infante, First Vice President of the National Assembly. The Caracazo erupted on February 27, 1989, when protests broke out in Caracas and Miranda against IMF-backed economic measures introduced under President Carlos Andres Perez, widely known as the 'Paquetazo.' The unrest quickly spread into riots across several areas, and the government responded with a crackdown that became a defining turning point in Venezuela's political and social history."
