"Clashes between protesters and police erupted outside the Greek Parliament in Athens on Saturday as hundreds of people rallied to mark the third anniversary of the country's deadliest rail disaster, the Tempi train crash. Footage shows protesters observing a minute of silence for the 57 crash victims at Syntagma Square. Some can be seen holding flags and signs reading 'I don't have oxygen', originating from the final words of the victim, among others. "No one has been forgiven, no one has forgotten, we demand justice, we lived three years ago a deep tragedy that shook our lives, we are not about to drop it," President of the Association of the Tempi victims, Pavlos Aslanidis, said. Several opposition parties and labour unions supported the protest. Unions also organised a nationwide 24-hour strike in solidarity, triggering disruption of public transportation services across the country. "Thousands have flooded the cities of Greece, we demand justice, our search has to get to the bone, we need to touch the foundations of the system," Communist Party of Greece Secretary General, Dimitris Koutsoubas, stated, joining the protest. With the arrival of police, some protesters started hurling stones and other objects at them, forcing police to respond with stun grenades. In total, over 150 people were detained, and most were arrested before the protest started in 'preventive' operations, according to local media. On the same day, similar demonstrations were held in other cities across Greece. The Tempi train crash on February 28, 2023, occurred when a freight train collided with a passenger train on the Athens-Thessaloniki line. An inquiry report had blamed human error, outdated infrastructure, and major systemic failures. The tragedy, which took the lives of 57 people and injured dozens, sparked nationwide outrage and calls for accountability.
