"Thousands of Iraqi protesters took to the streets of Baghdad's Sadr City on Sunday to mourn the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, following a joint US-Israeli strike on Tehran the previous day. Footage shows crowds waving Iranian and Shia flags, weeping and performing chest-beating rituals known as matam – a traditional Shia mourning practice – in grief over Khamenei's death. "To America and Israel, we say, 'The Shiites of Ali will endure. A leader falls as a martyr, and a thousand leaders rise to take his place.' We declare to you, 'By God, victory will be ours.' At your service, our Master, O Sahib al-Zaman (Lord of the Age)," a protester stated. Another mourner, Abdullah Al-Daraji, described the assassination as 'a painful tragedy for all Muslims,' vowing that if the conflict escalates, they would be "among the first to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Islamic Republic of Iraq." Senior Iraqi religious and political figures, including Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Moqtada al-Sadr, and the Popular Mobilisation Forces, issued statements of condolence following Khamenei's death. Iranian state television announced earlier on Sunday that Khamenei had been killed in the strike on the Iranian capital. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared, "This immense crime will not go unpunished, and a new chapter will be recorded in the history of the Islamic world." The United States and Israel launched a joint strike on Saturday, with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to 'destroy Iran's missiles'. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said that 'widespread missile and drone attacks' against Israel were underway. US bases were also reportedly targeted in the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq and Kuwait."
