"La France Insoumise (LFI) leader Jean-Luc Melenchon denounced the joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran during a campaign rally in Perpignan on Sunday, calling the strikes an act of supremacism and questioning the West's commitment to international law. Footage shows Melenchon arriving to a cheering crowd, where he supports LFI candidate Mickael Idrac ahead of the mid-March municipal elections, as backers queue outside to enter. "I cannot feel any sympathy for the government or for the actions of Mr Netanyahu, whom I consider a genocidal head of state. But I cannot feel sympathy for Mr Trump either. What do these people have in common? Supremacism," Melenchon proclaimed. "They will continue bombing, as is already the case across three quarters of Iran's territory, for days on end, in the name of weapons that no one will ever have seen even the slightest beginning of, and which could not have come into being if the agreement signed with Iran had been upheld – the agreement signed by all the countries you hear about today, and which Trump alone withdrew from during his first term," he persisted. On nuclear policy, Melenchon stressed, "If you say you do not want nuclear proliferation in Iran, then nuclear disarmament must be total in the region. It cannot be that only one country is allowed to possess nuclear weapons." "Whatever happens, we do not want war. No war! Not against the Russians, not against the Chinese. Not against anyone. There are ways to resolve problems other than war unless the goal is simply to make money," he concluded. Supporters echoed the politician's concerns outside the venue. "I think we are on a very bad path and that we are heading into a third world war," said Gilles. "I still hope there will be people wise enough to stop all this bloodshed." "It's becoming the law of the strongest. If no one follows the law anymore, it's anarchy," claimed another backer, Morgane. The rally comes as the United States and Israel continue strikes on Iran following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday. Iran's Revolutionary Guard launched retaliatory missile barrages at Israel, several Gulf states and US military bases across the region. The developments follow three recent rounds of talks between Iranian and American officials, one held in Muscat and two in Geneva, with both sides scheduled to hold technical-level talks on March 2."
