'Recovering the river is in our hands'- Argentine youth chosen by UN among environmental leaders for restoring Suquia

"A young man from Cordoba was selected among the world’s 17 young environmental leaders by the United Nations Organization (UN) for his contribution to restoring the Suquia River. Martin Vazquez Jones, a 30-year-old political scientist, was chosen as one of the Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals, a program that recognises young people aged 18 to 35 who promote the international organization’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Footage filmed on Saturday shows the Cordoba native taking part in cleanup efforts along the Suquia River, which has been affected by the accumulation of waste and toxic substances. Over the next two years, he will represent Argentina and Latin America in dialogue spaces with international agencies, governments and civil society organizations, focusing on access to clean water and sanitation, one of the central pillars of the UN 2030 Agenda. "I was chosen among more than 33,000 applicants from 150 countries. It is truly an honor, but at the same time a great responsibility, to be representing Cordoba, Argentina and Latin America on issues of pollution and the climate agenda," the young man said. Vazquez indicated that in 2026 he set himself the goal of going to the Suquia River every day to collect waste as "restoring the river is in our hands" He explained that he hopes to "inspire other people to do the same," an initiative he promotes through the social media channels of his organisation Sustainable River, dedicated to advancing the restoration of the tributary through community actions.
