CNN poll shows 59% US citizens disapprove strikes on Iran

A newly released CNN poll showed Monday that 59 percent of U.S. citizens disapprove of the U.S. decision to take military actions against Iran, reported Xinhua. The poll, conducted by SSRS, was "fielded shortly" after U.S. and Israeli forces launched the strikes. Sixty percent of the respondents said they do not think U.S. President Donald Trump has a clear plan for handling the situation, and 62 percent said he should get Congressional approval for any further military action. About 39 percent said the United States did not try hard enough at diplomacy before using military force, while only 27 percent feel that the United States made enough of an effort at diplomacy, and 33 percent were unsure. Some 56 percent say they see long-term military conflict between the United States and Iran as at least somewhat likely, including 24 percent who see that as a very likely outcome. The latest poll was released one day after a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 43 percent of U.S. citizens opposed the strikes on Iran. Both polls were released as Democratic and Republican lawmakers are deeply divided over the attack on Iran. Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to approve of the military actions, as only 18 percent of Democrats and 32 percent of independents approve, compared with 77 percent of Republicans, according to the CNN poll. Democratic lawmakers have lashed out at the action, arguing that there was no imminent threat and the attack was not authorized by Congress. They also warned that Trump was potentially dragging the United States into another protracted Middle East conflict.
