Heart beats in unison – Tens of thousands rally in India’s Kargil to call for justice and demand accountability for attacks on Iran

"Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in Kargil, a predominantly Shia Muslim district of India’s Ladakh, on Tuesday to demonstrate against the US-Israeli attacks on Iran that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Footage captured on Tuesday shows men, women, and youth filling the narrow streets of the north Indian town as they sang and moved in synchronised waves of mourning. Some carried portraits of the slain leader, waved black and red flags, and chanted slogans condemning the US and Israel for their actions. Men formed dense clusters stretching as far as the eye could see, as they performed matam, the ritual chest-beating that signifies grief for the martyrs in the Shia sect of Islam. Female protesters marched behind, singing and also beating their chests in unison. “Today, we have gathered here to bid a final farewell to our leader and express our support and solidarity with the people of Iran," said Ahmad Ali, General Secretary of Baseej-E-Imam. “Whenever cowardly and barbaric powers like the United States and Israel attempt to attack Iran or threaten Islam, we, the followers of Islam and admirers of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will take to the streets to protest and raise our voices against their heinous acts,” he continued. For many participants, the killing of Khamenei was seen as an assault on the dignity and rights of Muslim communities. They accused the US and Israel of destabilising the Middle East and undermining peace and human rights. “America and Israel may think that by killing our leader, they have won the war, but in reality, they are losing it. They do not understand that we Muslims are ready to sacrifice our lives for the sake of our nation and for the oppressed, and against the oppressors,” stated protester Sadiq Ali. While the rally remained largely peaceful, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh took precautionary measures amid wider protests across the region. Security forces were placed on high alert, educational institutions were closed in some areas, and movement restrictions were temporarily imposed to ensure public safety. This comes after the US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday morning. Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday. It comes after a number of rounds of failed talks between the Americans and Iranians."
