Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has released an official statement following the controversial remark of QC fourth district Representative Bong Suntay on Filipina actress Anne Curtis during a House Hearing. “I urge Congressman Bong Suntay to apologize for the inappropriate remarks that he made at a recent House committee hearing,” Mayor Joy wrote on Tuesday, March 3. “His words directly contradict the spirit of empowerment that we have worked hard to build here in Quezon City. Over the years, we have embraced the difficult work of establishing protections for women, constantly striving to honor their rights by creating safe spaces and opportunities for them.” Earlier that day, Cong. Suntay said, “Lastly, alam mo naman minsan nasa Shangri-la ako. Nakita ko si Anne Curtis— ang ganda-ganda pala niya. You know, may desire so loob ko na nag-init talaga at na-imagine ko na lang kung anong puwedeng mangyari, pero siyempre hanggang imagination na lang 'yun. Pero, 'di naman siguro ako kasuhan dahil kung ano-ano 'yung na-imagine ko eh. Thank you very much, Madam Chair.” (Lastly, I was once at Shangri-La, and I saw Anne Curtis. She was really, really pretty. You know, I had this desire inside me, and I could only imagine what could have happened. But of course, that is only in my imagination, and they would probably not sue me for my imagination. Thank you very much, Madam Chair.) The QC Mayor expressed her disappointment with the incident and revealed that Cong. Suntay was part of the body that passed the city's Gender and Development Code. He was also the majority floor leader of the city council when Quezon City passed the Bawal Bastos Ordinance. “Our policies are a declaration of our city's values—of what we stand for and what we refuse to tolerate. We expect our elected officials to be the first to live by them. Thus, it is clear to me: We must not hesitate to push back against any act that undermines the dignity of our women. We must continue to stand for their safety, dignity, and equality—without exception and without compromise,” the QC Mayor added. At the end of her statement, Mayor Joy urged Congressman Suntay to take full accountability for his actions. QC Mayor Joy wrote, “We call on Congressman Suntay to take full accountability for his remarks, issue a proper apology, and conduct himself with the dignity that his office—and our city—demand. Our people deserve no less.” Love this content? Subscribe to our newsletter for more captivating stories and lifestyle features. Just enter your email here .
