'Total chaos' - Long lines at petrol stations after leak at key field sparks 14-day emergency over gas supply

"Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines declared a nationwide state of emergency over natural gas supply on Monday after a leak and deflagration at the Camisea gas field in the Cusco jungle on Sunday. The emergency runs from March 1 to March 14. A ministerial resolution said supply for the domestic market will be prioritised and a “gas rationing mechanism” will be put in place. Footage filmed on Tuesday shows long lines of cars and trucks at a gas station in Lima as drivers queued to refill natural gas or gasoline amid strong demand. "It is chaos, all of this. At every filling station I have been going to, it is full, full, full. This is the only station where the regular price is cheaper. But imagine the queue, the traffic, the heat. Everyone feels disappointed," said a driver. "Fourteen days, fifteen days is too much. We are at a stage of learning both evolutionarily and as citizens, and also those in charge of the State. They [the politicians] should be more serious in that respect. Where is the Comptroller? Where is the audit they carry out? There has been no emergency plan for this kind of situation," another taxi driver added. In Lima, home to almost one-third of Peru's population, gas rationing introduced after Sunday's leak is prioritising mass public transport, but not taxis or cargo vehicles, local media reported. Some service stations have already stopped selling natural gas, the reports indicate. The leak happened on Sunday at the KP 43 valve station in the Megantoni district of La Convencion province in Cusco. The pipeline infrastructure is operated by Transportadora de Gas del Peru (TGP), which said it suspended gas injections and the transport of liquids immediately after the incident."
