Middle East shock hits Seoul - Stocks tumble, trading halts as Iran war shakes global markets amid 'prolonged' oil volatility

"South Korean markets fell sharply on Tuesday, forcing a brief trading halt as investors reacted to US-Israeli attacks on Iran and surging oil prices. Footage captured at the KRX building in Seoul on Wednesday shows stock prices plunging, while key indexes, including KOSPI and KOSDAQ, also posted steep losses. Investors said the outlook remains uncertain as the conflict unfolds and oil prices swing on fears of a prolonged confrontation. "I think the Iran situation is likely to be prolonged. It will probably take about a week before we can make any real judgment on where things are headed," said retail investor Jung Jun-ho. Jung, however, noted that the current situation could present a compelling investment opportunity, considering additional purchases if the market continues to fall. Another investor, Kim Go-sung, predicted the sell-off could last for at least a month, pointing to previous market shocks linked to tensions in the Middle East. "Trump has said the war will last about four weeks but either way, once it's over, there's no fundamental issue in terms of valuation, so I expect a V-shaped recovery [...] even if the KOSPI drops to the mid-4,000s, I believe it will quickly rebound to at least the mid-5,000s even if returning to 6,000 might be a stretch," he said. ROK's stock market has seen a sharp reversal, with the KOSPI dropping as much as 11 percent intraday on March 4, triggering market-wide trading halts and a circuit breaker on the KOSDAQ. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has caused oil prices to skyrocket and prompted fears of an energy shock, particularly for Seoul as a major energy importer, according to media reports. The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday morning. Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday. It comes after a number of rounds of talks between the Americans and Iranians."
