Israel shells southern Lebanon's Al-Khiam amid escalating tensions with Hezbollah

"The Israeli army targeted southern Lebanon's town of Al-Khiam on Wednesday, amid escalating border tensions with Hezbollah. Footage shows pillar of black smoke billowing after the residential area was hit. On the same day, the Israeli army announced it had launched new waves of airstrikes on southern Lebanon. Before that IDF issued urgent warnings to residents to evacuate, saying "anyone present near Hezbollah members, facilities, or combat assets is putting their life at risk." "Any house used for military purposes may be subject to targeting," the warning read, also urging southern Lebanon residents to "immediately head north of the Litani River." In response, Hezbollah announced that it had targeted "an armoured personnel carrier and a Merkava tank in the village of Houla with appropriate weapons," describing the attack as retaliation for the "Israeli aggression that targeted dozens of Lebanese cities and towns, including Beirut's southern suburbs." Israel had carried out strikes on southern Lebanon and Beirut's southern suburbs on Monday, saying they come "in response to Hezbollah attacks," while the group said its operations were "in response to the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei late last week." The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday morning. Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a strike on Saturday. It comes after a number of rounds of talks between the Americans and Iranians."
