Feeding those in need - Sidon community kitchen provides meals for Lebanese families displaced by escalation

"A community kitchen in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon is providing meals to families displaced by the recent escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. The initiative aims to ease the hardship faced by those who have fled their homes. Footage filmed on Wednesday shows women preparing food while volunteers package and transport meals for distribution to displaced residents. Sanaa Dabbagh, manager of the Sidon community kitchen, said the initiative is working to provide as many meals as possible to those in need. “We prepare around 300 meals for displaced people living in neighbourhoods across the city, and between 580 and 620 meals for shelters,” she said. One volunteer explained that he joined the effort to support families from southern Lebanon who are facing extremely difficult conditions. According to Lebanese media, the community kitchen was established in February 2020 and has since provided hundreds of meals to vulnerable families. Southern Lebanon has witnessed a large wave of displacement following Israeli evacuation warnings for several towns and villages. The escalation began after Hezbollah announced early Monday that it had launched rockets and drones targeting the Mishmar HaCarmel missile defence compound, describing the attack as a response to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader. In response, the Israeli military said it had carried out strikes on several villages in southern Lebanon after issuing evacuation warnings. "
