Port in a storm - Ambulances rush survivors of Iranian frigate sunk by US submarine off Sri Lanka to Galle hospital

"Ambulances carried rescued Iranian sailors to Galle Hospital on Wednesday, as Sri Lankan authorities continued to recover survivors after a US submarine sank an Iranian warship off the coast. Footage shows ambulances with sirens blaring through the city, transporting the injured to the hospital. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that the Sri Lankan Navy rescued 32 people after an early-morning distress call from the Iranian naval vessel. The IRIS Dena frigate was struck by torpedo fire from a US submarine, the first such sinking since the Second World War. The incident reportedly left at least 87 sailors dead, a number which is expected to rise. A video released by the US Department of War on X shows a torpedo striking the vessel, triggering an underwater explosion that tore the ship apart, sending a large plume of water into the air. The attack marks a significant escalation in US operations against the Iranian navy, coming on the heels of US and Israeli strikes on Iran that began with joint attacks on Saturday. Tehran said it was retaliating with strikes on Israel and US assets across the region, with explosions reported throughout the Gulf. This comes after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday."
