"Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides addressed the nation on Wednesday to offer reassurances amid the 'unprecedented crisis' unfolding in the Middle East. “Our primary concern, our highest and non-negotiable priority, is the security of our country and all of you,” Christodoulides said in a televised address from Nicosia. He stated that the entire government and all relevant services of the Republic had been “immediately placed on alert and full operational readiness.” In what he described as a critical moment, Christodoulides said the government was acting “with responsibility, transparency, and with the sole aim, the security of the country and its citizens.” The president added that efforts were underway to repatriate Cypriot nationals stranded abroad, noting that “the first flights with repatriates” had already arrived in the country. “I want to repeat once more in the clearest way that our country does not participate in any way and does not intend to be part of any military operation,” he said, reaffirming Cyprus’ intention to maintain a humanitarian role in the crisis “always as part of the solution and never as part of the problem.” Christodoulides said Cyprus has remained in constant contact with partners and allies, securing support from Greece and France while consultations with other states continue. The announcement came after a midnight drone strike on a British military base on the island on Sunday caused limited damage and prompted a partial evacuation of the facility. Two additional drones were intercepted on Monday and were believed to have been launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon. In response to the incident and the continued threat of ballistic missile attacks, the United Kingdom and allied countries have strengthened the island’s defences. Naval vessels were seen arriving at the port of Limassol early on Wednesday after Greece dispatched two frigates and four F-16 fighter jets to reinforce Cyprus’ security. The developments come amid a wider regional escalation, with the United States and Israel exchanging strikes with Iran since last weekend. The joint US-Israeli attacks on Tehran killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei."
