'Military conflict alone can't resolve issues!' - Modi warns after US torpedo sinks Iranian warship off Sri Lankan coast

"Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned on Thursday that "military conflict alone can't resolve any issue," after a United States submarine sank an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka's coast on Wednesday - the latest in a series of escalations since the US and Israel started their offensive on Iran on Saturday. "Whether in Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support every effort for a speedy end to the conflict and peace," Modi added. "We also agree that reform of global institutions is not only necessary but urgent to address growing global challenges. Eradicating terrorism in all its forms is our shared commitment," he added. The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was sunk by a US submarine in international waters roughly 40 nautical miles off Sri Lanka's southern coast on Wednesday, according to US defence officials. Sri Lanka's navy launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call, recovering dozens of bodies and rescuing 32 sailors from the water, while others remain missing. The vessel reportedly had about 180 crew members on board and was returning from a multinational naval exercise in India when it was struck. Iranian authorities condemned the attack and warned Washington it would 'bitterly regret' it, as tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran continue to escalate across the region. Modi called the situation 'a matter of grave concern', stressing that India supports diplomatic solutions. He spoke with Gulf leaders, condemned attacks on Gulf states, and activated a control room to provide Indians with emergency support. After the US and Israel attacked Iran, and Tehran has since responded with strikes on Israel and US-linked targets across the region. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was later confirmed dead in the strikes. The confrontation follows several recent rounds of talks between US and Iranian officials."
