Seeking shelter - Sidon's Lebanese Kuwaiti School provides sanctuary for those fleeing Israeli airstrikes

"The Lebanese Kuwaiti School in the city of Sidon was seen providing shelter and humanitarian assistance to displaced people fleeing villages in southern Lebanon amid Israeli airstrikes. Footage filmed on Thursday shows a number of older people sitting inside school classrooms that had been converted into temporary shelters, and a barber seen offering free haircuts. "I left my home, my family, and my relatives and became displaced, and I launched this humanitarian initiative to help the people of the south among the displaced. I give them haircuts for the sake of God," said Mohammad Tarhini. A displaced woman from the village of Habboush, Suad Haderj, explained how she couldn't leave her cat behind: “It is a soul like us. I would not leave it under the shelling to die. Just as we feel, it feels, and of course it would be afraid. I carried it in a cardboard box on the road for 12 hours from the south to here, and it did not complain at all." Executive director of the Union of Relief and Development Associations (URDA) Jehan Al-Qais, said: “We have 27 rooms, and each room has 6, 7, or 8 families—around 40 people in one room. That is far too many for a single room. As you can see, the playgrounds are crowded with families who are sleeping in the cold, and the humanitarian situation is very difficult.” She added: “There is great solidarity, as people are supporting each other. There are individuals we do not know who bring us water and food. I appeal to people of goodwill because the situation is extremely tragic. As you know, we are in Ramadan and people are fasting, but they are our people and we must embrace them because we are one.” The Israel Defence Forces announced the continued targeting what it described as 'Hezbollah headquarters' in Lebanon. It also issued a warning to residents of the southern suburbs of Beirut to “save their lives and evacuate their homes immediately.” Israel launched strikes on Lebanon on Monday, in the latest escalation of the conflict with Hezbollah - after attacking Iran together with the US on Saturday. The IDF said it was responding to Hezbollah's own attacks, which the group said were retaliation for the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday. Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region. According to the most recent figures, Iranian media reported over 1200 dead, with six deaths of military personnel admitted by the US side. Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday. It comes after a number of rounds of talks between the Americans and Iranians. "
